The 2021 Tailgate Schedule

Team Record (7-6, 3-6)

09/04 WVU, WIN! (30-24), The season, as usual, begins optimistically

The WVU QB is showing how to play fair and share…

09/11 – Howard, WIN! (62-0), Echoes of 2019 with the Terps at 2-0 and a throttling of Howard. Game 3 vs. underdog Temple brought the Terps back to earth. Can we break through?

The highlight of the game started before the game.

09/17 (Fri) @Illinois, WIN! (20-17), Terps kick a game-winning field goal as time expires against an inferior opponent. At least they didn’t get Templed.

When they go high, we go low….

09/25 – Kent St. WIN! (37-16), Terps roll to another victory. Such comfortable wins often lead to discomfiting losses. Can the Terps break the most recent block of futility with a win against a quality opponent this Friday? We’ll see, but past performance is not indicative of future performance…

Hey, don’t grab me there bro…

10/1 (Fri) – Iowa, LOSS! (51-14), In typical fashion, the “up and coming” Terps faced a nationally ranked team on national television (with an always-infamous “Black Out” theme) and laid an epic egg. Is the season a total loss yet? Perhaps not, but past experience says that this may be a harbinger of things to come.

Coach, this does not look good…

10/09 – @Ohio State, LOSS! (66-17), In two short weeks, the Terps have shown that they haven’t caught up to anybody in the B1G yet as the Terps get trounced by the Buckeyes and lose another starting wide receiver in the process. The injuries are starting to mount, and so are the losses. Can the Terps squeak out two more wins this season?

Ole!

10/16 – BYE, (Bye)

10/23 – @Minnesota, LOSS! (34-16), Well, the extra week off to get healthy and plan for the next opponent was … not a success. Credit Minnesota: their game plan was to run it down our throats, and they were quite successful. The only thing positive was a lack of new injuries…

Not a linebacker or lineman in sight…

10/30 – Indiana, WIN! (38-35). It wasn’t pretty, and the Terps did everything in their power to make the game interesting, but a win is a win, right?

I thought this was football, not rugby…

11/06 – StatePenn, LOSS (31-14). While the final outcome wasn’t surprising, you wouldn’t know by the final score that it was actually a competitive game. The Terps did find ways to lose, however, including not remembering that #5 is StatePenn’s BEST PLAYER and should not be left by himself…

No no no wait! Now I see you are #5!!

11/13 @Michigan State, LOSS (40-21). In a game indicative of the season, Maryland was competitive enough to be frustratingly close, and inept enough (penalties, turnovers, senior moments from 18-22 year olds) that reenforces our despair.

Surfing over the Maryland defense.

11/20 – Michigan, LOSS (59-18). Maryland seemed determined to sleepwalk through this dismantling to set up the drama for next week’s Battle of the Non-Titans for a chance to go to some bowl named after cat food or power yard implements. A loss next week will represent a new low, but then again, when you keep bouncing off the bottom, new lows are like the coming of spring: eternal.

No, I have not been at the Vous for the last 9 hours…

11/27 – @Rutgerz, WIN (40-16). The season came down to our annual “showdown” with Rutgers. Both teams came in with 5-6 records needing one win for bowl eligibility.* Maryland came ready to play, and the outcome was not in doubt from the start. For the first time since 2016, the Terps are bowling!

The agony of defeat

*Rutgers subsequently was invited to the Gator Bowl with 6 days notice as Texas A&M had to pull out of the game due to COVID. There is no justice in this world!

12/29 – @Pinstripe Bowl vs Virginia Tech, WIN (54-10). While Maryland holds the all-time series lead against this former (short-term) ACC “rival”, in the more recent past the Terps got drubbed, with the exception of the close game win to end our membership in the ACC. However, the Hokies are not the birds of the past and the Terrapins, as one writer put it, eviscerated them. Sadly this brings us renewed hope for 2022.

Don’t stop me now, we’re having such a good time, we’re having a ball
